The Legacy of Dr. Arce
Who We Are
The Yleana Arce Foundation is a US-based nonprofit private organisation designated as a 501(c)(3) charitable foundation.
The objective is to make grants to public charities, universities, and private operating foundations that support education, medical research, environmental initiatives, and other charitable activities aimed at improving the human condition and the planet.
The Foundation is committed to advancing scientific knowledge for the public benefit, with a particular focus on funding health and medical research that addresses pressing challenges in human health and the environment.
To ensure it funds the most transformative and impactful work, the Foundation incorporates input from a scientific advisory team.
Among its advisors are Dr. Natalia Izotova, Dr. Sam Orange, and Dr. Tom Jameson.
The legacy of Dr. Arce
Elda Yleana Arce was a Latina immigrant who, despite being discouraged from pursuing a medical career, fervently believed in the transformative power of education.
When Elda Yleana Arce came to the United States in 1975, she was told that she should reconsider her dream of being a doctor.
As a Latina immigrant, she listened to people tell her that no white patients would want her, so no hospitals would either.
She proved them wrong by becoming the head of the Adolescent Medicine Clinic at Children’s National Medical Centre. It is in her memory that her son, Daniel Hammond, named the Yleana Arce Foundation, and it is in her honour that we are dedicated to improving the human condition and planet.
